He pledged his future to Peterborough in 1994 but when he was ready to start his professional career his average was too high to fit into the all-conquering 1998 side.
He hasn't raced in Britain since the end of 2007 when he ended a spell at Eastbourne.
He should become the fifth rider to make 100 GP appearances this season (he goes into the new campaign on 98) and he is also fifth in all-time GP victories, with ten.
Finished tenth in last year's series but finished the season in superb form, reaching the Grand Final in two out of the last three rounds and was granted a wild card entry to this year's competition which gets underway in Leszno, Poland, on April 30.
Won his first world title in 2002 and then had back-to-back victories in 2007 and 2008 and will be looking to claim his fourth series win this year.
Started his bid for a fourth world title with victory in the opening round of the new season, the 2011 European Grand Prix at Leszno, Poland.
