PETERBOROUGH mascot Mickie Simpson put on a terrific show in the opening round of the British Youth Championship yesterday.

Racing in his 'T Balfe Construction' Panthers kevlars, Simpson finished second in the 125cc class at the East of England Showground.

The 12 year-old, from Boston, has fast become a popular figure at Peterborough and regularly puts in practice laps ahead of meetings.

And he used his knowledge of the Alwalton track to great effect when climbing onto the podium after following home Sam McGurk in a re-run final.

'The Mickster' was involved in a tangle with Luke Harrison going into the opening corner of the initial staging, but thankfully both riders were able to get back to their feet.

Harrison eventually finished at the rear with Bailey Fellows taking third spot in the finale of an event in which 23 riders contested 24 excellent heats.

Peterborough promoter Ged Rathbone said: "It is a huge honour to bring these events to the East of England Showground.

"The youngsters are the future of British speedway and I've been hugely impressed by the racing produced yesterday and in the 500cc and 250cc classes the previous Sunday.

"After also staging the British Under 21 Championship semi-final last week, it shows we're doing everything we can to back the development of homegrown riders."
