PETERBOROUGH ended their Premier League season on a losing note last night.

A depleted 'T Balfe Construction' Panthers side were beaten 59-33 at Edinburgh in a meaningless final fixture.

Number one Craig Cook was the leading Peterborough performer as he piled up 13 points at an Armadale track which he called home for five years.

Cook provided one of the two heat wins from Panthers with Jye Etheridge, one of four guests in a makeshift septet, the other man to come home in front.

Peterborough were unable to record a race advantage but they did keep Edinburgh in check until a hat-trick of 5-1s between heats eight and 10 sent the hosts storming clear.

Cook had to settle for second spot and a 4-4 outcome when taking a tactical ride in heat 11 before three further advantages form the Monarchs extended their lead.

Cook and captain Ulrich Ostergaard - the only two regular Peterborough men on show - then packed the minor places in the final race of what team boss Carl Johnson dubbed a 'season to forget'.

Johnson said: “Going to Edinburgh is a tough task at the best of times, let alone with such a patched up team.

“We tried to keep ourselves in contention for as long as possible, but the three 5-1s in a row really broke our resistance.

“It was a disappointing way to end a season which we would all like to forget.

“Now is the time to reflect on the past few months, assess the things that went wrong and look at what can be put right in the future.”

Peterborough sit seventh in the Premier League table, one place outside the play-offs. They could still be leapfrogged by Workington should the Comets with their one remaining meeting.
