PETERBOROUGH star Craig Cook is chasing World Cup glory tonight.

The 'T Balfe Construction' Panthers number one lines up for Great Britain as they go in pursuit of Final honours at the National Speedway Stadium in Manchester.

Cook is joined by two former Peterborough riders, Danny King and Robert Lambert, in the GB quartet along with two-time world champion Tai Woffinden.

And he is optimistic they can make a big impact when taking on Event One winners Poland, Event Two top-dogs Sweden and last night's Race-Off victors Australia in the annual battle for international supremacy.

Cook said: "I'm delighted to be part of such a young and ambitious team. It is one which is really hungry for success.

"We're all relishing the challenge of riding in the World Cup Final and we are all determined to make the most of the opportunity.

"We will have great backing from the British fans and I genuinely believe we have as a good a chance of any team involved.

"We might as well just stay at home if we don't believe we can win it."

And promoter Ged Rathbone insists it is a huge accolade for Peterborough to have a rider competing in the World Cup Final.

He said: "It is a massive honour for a Premier League club to have a rider involved in a meeting of this magnitude.

"Craig is a top-class performer and hopefully he can get plenty of points for his country.

There is no bigger fan of British speedway than myself and I really hope our boys can make the most of home advantage to win a medal."

Cook warmed up for World Cup duty with a dozen points to help Peterborough record a 48-45 win at Sheffield in the Premier League on Thursday night.

And he will return to club action tomorrow (Sunday) when Panthers face a trip to his first club, Workington.
