PETERBOROUGH co-promoter Trevor Swales says the club’s unforgettable Elite League title triumph of 2006 feels like ‘it was only last week’.
Four members of the Panthers team which sensationally snatched the top-flight crown during a dramatic Grand Final finish against Reading are reunited on Sunday.
Hans Andersen, Niels Kristian Iversen and Piotr Swiderski return to the East of England Showground for Ulrich Ostergaard’s ’10 Year Spectacular’.
Swales, who was team boss a decade ago, said: “The Grand Final feels like it was only last week. Days like that never leave you.
“I don’t think it will ever be repeated and I have to admit I enjoy watching the DVDs quite often.
“I still can’t work out why Jim Lynch, who was the Reading team manager, put Greg Hancock off the worst gate in heat 15.
“It would have been a lot harder for us if he had his riders the other way round, but I’m not going to complain about that!
“All I know is a finish to a season like that will probably never be repeated again.”
Swales still craves more success as Panthers attempt to land the Premier League spoils in 2016.
They have assembled a team packed full of potential for the new campaign with an aim of building on their run to the play-off semi-finals last term.
“I certainly hope we can challenge to win titles again,” added Swales.
“We showed last year that we can be really competitive in the Premier League despite some dreadful injury problems.
“We fell a bit short in the end, but it gives us something to build on in the new season.”
And Swales believes trophy glory would the perfect way to cap the testimonial season of skipper Ostergaard.
“Ulrich hasn’t altered a bit over the years,” Swales continued.
“He still talks about being part of the 2006 team and I know how much it would mean to him to captain Peterborough to success this year.
“He has been a terrific servant to Peterborough, and British speedway as a whole.
“There is no doubt he deserves to have a great day on Sunday. I just hope he gets the right weather and big support."
Ostergaard's '10 Year Spectacular' gets underway at 2pm on Sunday. It features a mouth-watering 16-man individual event, a host of exhibition races and laps from the legendary Hans Nielsen.
