CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS PREVIEW

Thursday July 19, 2018
PETERBOROUGH will look to secure a Major Events double when they compete in the Championship Pairs at Somerset on Friday (7pm).

Scott Nicholls and Michael Palm Toft represent the T.Balfe Construction Panthers in the traditional pre-British Grand Prix showpiece event which features ten of the eleven Championship clubs.

Both riders were part of Panthers’ victorious Fours quartet at Redcar earlier this month – but this is a title Peterborough have not won for 20 years, since Glenn Cunningham and Brett Woodifield triumphed in 1998.

Nicholls has been boosted on the eve of the event by securing a new team place in the Premiership following the annulment of Rye House, as he has now joined Leicester.

Panthers have been drawn in Group 1 at Somerset, where they will face opposition from Lakeside, Scunthorpe, Edinburgh and Berwick.

That means their group involves three current Somerset Premiership riders in Richard Lawson, Jake Allen and Aaron Summers.

Defending champions Sheffield are in Group 2 and are represented by Kyle Howarth and Charles Wright.

Palm Toft said: “I’ve done the Pairs before with Peterborough (in 2015) and we got quite far.

“But I had an engine blow-up and when I went out on my spare bike in the semi-final the clutch dipped in too hard and I lost out at the gate.

“Hopefully this year I won’t have an engine blow-up and then we can go that bit further!

“It would be nice to add the Pairs to the Fours, and I look at it as another meeting where hopefully we can do well.

“I actually rode for Somerset for a time but for whatever reason I never got to ride a home meeting, it never happened. But I was there a few weeks ago with King’s Lynn (scoring 8+2).”
